Why DUI Rates Spike in Indiana During Labor Day and Halloween

You might not think of Labor Day as being one of the biggest holidays for alcohol consumption, but in Indiana, it’s one of the most dangerous holidays for drunk driving. In 2020, of the 898 traffic fatalities that occurred, 17 percent (151 deaths) were alcohol-related. Twelve of those fatalities took place over Labor Day weekend alone.

Why is this particular weekend so deadly? No one knows for sure, but it’s true all across the country. According to National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), during the 2019 Labor Day holiday period, 38% of fatalities in traffic crashes involved a drunk driver.

These high rates may be partly due to increased incidents of day drinking. When day-drinking, many people consume much more alcohol than they realize. For example, in a traditional Labor Day BBQ or picnic, you can spend hours sipping beers, cocktails, or other types of alcohol without thinking about your total consumption. When it’s time to drive home, you may be more impaired than you think.

Halloween, too, is one of the more lethal nights for drunk driving. The high foot traffic of trick-or-treaters and the high number of alcohol-fueled Halloween parties can be a deadly mix. The Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles reports that in 2019, there were 21 vehicle occupants and four pedestrians killed in drunk-driving crashes on Halloween night. This sad statistic is not surprising given that according to National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, from 2015 to 2019, 41 percent of all fatalities in motor vehicle crashes on Halloween night were accidents involving drunk drivers.

To keep the roads safe on Labor Day and other holidays with high DUI rates, Indiana law enforcement participates in an initiative called “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” by increasing the number of officers on the roadways. Officers keep an anxious eye out for anyone driving erratically or failing to observe safety laws.

Whether Labor Day, Halloween, or any other holiday period, stay safe by arranging for a safe ride home when you consume alcohol. A drunk driving accident can change the course of your life, as well as others, in a blink of an eye. Be smart and don’t drink and drive.
